The solution to a dishcloth knitting period, why Floridians are wimpy, and my future design efforts.

It seems to me that every knitter and crocheter at some point in his or her life goes through a period when they make dishcloths. Personal Opinion Ahead: I have no use for knitted dishcloths. I feel like they’re tacky, they don’t work effectively and frankly, terry cloth dishcloths are super cheap (dollar store anyone?) That being said, early in my knitting life, I too, knit some dishcloths. I wanted to learn how to do cables, and they seemed like an easy, small project to learn a new stitch pattern on. And a good way to use up stash. Of course, projects like Knitty’s Foliage and Fetching can also let you learn new techniques in small dimensions. Unfortunately, I hadn’t discovered the world of online knitting at that point. Being a sentimental pack rat, I held onto these dishcloths, which hid in the bottom of my stash. Recently, I dug them up and decided that something HAD to be done. I didn’t want to throw them out, because they were my first cables, but at the same time, there was NO WAY these were going in my kitchen as dishcloths. Enter the trend of knitted Swiffer covers on Craftster. I have a Target O-mop, which is similar to a swiffer. It only came with one cover, and replacement covers are pricey, at least, on my budget. So, a little crocheting, some buttons and voila!

My dishclothes have been redeemed to mop covers and the thrifty knitting gods are at peace.

Now to my next rant: why Floridians are wimpy?
The answer: this week the temperatures have been in the 60’s and 50’s and the general consensus is that everyone is freezing. And I have discovered that my closet has a great defecit of sweaters, thus causing me to speed up the pace on this one:

I’ve just got to finish the sleeves and knit the neckband.

Lastly, to talk about designing. Lately, I’ve been getting really excited about designing my own patterns. I have a few in the works right now. I plan to eventually offer pdf files on here (for free) and on my future etsy (for sale). My Christmas wishlist is comprised mostly of books to help me study design, such as Barbara Walker and Elizabeth Zimmerman books.
Here’s some of the patterns in the works:
Felted Entrelac Armwarmers
Felted Lunch tote (knitted and crocheted)
Lorelei (drop stitch vest in bamboo or soy silk)
A “Bamboo” tea cozy (the stitch pattern will imitate bamboo, the yarn will be wool)

I’m also working on a hat for my boyfriend:

He made the sketch, so now I’m working on the execution. I think that the outer blue stripes will probably be thinner in the final project.
